What Is a Color Melt?

Finished bronde color on a salon client, what is color melt, at Scott Farmer Hair Salon in Venice FL

Quick answer

What is color melt hair coloring?

Color melt is a technique where three or more shades are blended seamlessly from root to tip so you cannot see where one color ends and the next begins. It removes harsh lines and gives a glossy, multi-dimensional finish.

How is color melt different from balayage and ombre?

People mix these up because they all create soft, dimensional color. The difference is what each one actually does. Balayage is how color is placed, painted freehand on the surface. Ombre is a high-contrast fade from dark roots to light ends. Color melt is how colors are blended together, melting at least three tones so the transition disappears. I often use color melt to finish a balayage so the root, mid-length, and ends flow into one another.

Color melt vs balayage vs ombre

TechniqueWhat it doesLookGrow-out
Color meltBlends 3+ tones into a seamless gradientGlossy, no visible linesSoft, 8 to 12 weeks
BalayageHand-paints brightness onto sectionsSun-kissed, dimensionalSoft, 12 to 16 weeks
OmbreFades dark roots to light endsHigh contrast, bottom-heavyLow upkeep, 16 to 20 weeks

In plain terms: balayage is where the color goes, color melt is how the colors blend together, and ombre is a bold dark-to-light fade.

Who is color melt best for?

Color melt suits anyone who wants a soft, expensive-looking blend with no harsh regrowth line, whether that is a brunette adding warmth, a blonde softening a root, or a gray-blending client easing the transition. It is also the finishing move that makes balayage and highlights look seamless rather than striped.

When to choose a color melt

  1. You hate a hard root line and want the grow-out to disappear.
  2. You want a glossy, multi-tonal finish rather than flat single-process color.
  3. You are blending grays and want a soft transition instead of solid coverage.
  4. You are softening an old ombre or a grown-out balayage.
  5. You want low upkeep with a line-free grow-out in Florida humidity.

Color melt FAQ

Is color melt the same as balayage?

No. Balayage is how color is placed, painted freehand. Color melt is how colors are blended, melting three or more tones into a seamless gradient. They are often used together.

How long does a color melt last?

About 8 to 12 weeks, with a soft grow-out and no hard line, so it still looks good as it fades.

Does color melt cover gray?

It blends gray beautifully into a soft transition, but it does not fully cover gray the way a solid color does. If full coverage is the goal, I will tell you straight.

What color line do you use?

Schwarzkopf professional only, custom-mixed to your base, your goal, and your porosity.

How much does color melt cost in Venice, FL?

Color melt is usually added to a balayage, highlight, or color service rather than booked alone, so I quote it as part of your plan at the consultation.
