What is The Pre-Cut Read?
The Pre-Cut Read is a structured consultation method I developed over more than 30 years and 15,000 clients. Most chairs go straight to cutting or coloring off a phone photo. I do not. I read five things first, write a plan, and tell you the price before the cape goes on.
The five things I read
- Density. How much hair you actually have. It sets the weight I leave in and how I section.
- Growth pattern. Your cowlicks, your part, and your nape, so the cut falls right as it grows out.
- Porosity. How your hair takes and holds color. It sets the Schwarzkopf formula and the timing.
- Lifestyle fit. How many minutes you really spend styling, so the result is one you can keep at home.
- Your goal. The one clear result you want, in your words and one photo.
Why it matters
The Pre-Cut Read is the cheapest insurance your hair has. A cut planned to your growth pattern does not lose its shape in a week. A color formulated to your porosity holds tone instead of fading warm. Skipping the read is how people end up with a style they cannot repeat and a color that needs fixing a month later.

What to bring, and what to ask me
Bring three things and the read gets sharper straight away. An inspiration photo, your honest color history, and your real morning routine. Not the routine you wish you had. The one you actually do on a Tuesday.
Color history is the one people soften. Box dye from two years ago still lives in your ends, and it changes how the lift behaves. Tell me. I would rather work with the truth than discover it halfway through a lightener.
These are the questions worth asking me, and I will answer all five before you book:
- Is this realistic for my hair? Some photos are a different texture, a different density, or a wig.
- How much upkeep does it need? A look you cannot maintain is not a good result.
- What will it cost? I write the number down before the cape goes on.
- Will it damage my hair? If the answer is yes, I will tell you and offer a slower plan.
- How many visits will it take? A big change is often two or three sessions, not one.
If it is your first chemical service with me, or your hair is already compromised, we plan a strand test before anything else. Fifteen minutes of testing beats a color correction later.
Why I usually color before I cut
Clients ask this a lot, so here is the honest answer. When I color first, I get to see the real result before I shape anything. Tone and dimension land differently on every head. Once the lift is done I can see exactly where the brightness falls and where the eye goes, and then I cut to that.
There is a practical reason too. Lifting can leave the very ends a little dry, so cutting after the color takes those ends off and leaves a cleaner line. Freshly washed, sectioned hair also parts more precisely, which matters when I am building a shape.
It is not a hard rule, and any stylist who tells you it is has stopped reading the hair. A big length change flips the order, because there is no sense paying to lift six inches you are about to lose. A simple trim on existing hair color flips it too. The read decides the order, every time.
