Box Dye vs. Salon Color: What a Year Really Costs
I am Scott Farmer. I have colored hair for more than 30 years, and clients ask me this all the time: does box dye really save money? Short answer: yes, in raw dollars it does. This tool shows you the honest numbers for both paths over 1 year and 3 years. Then you can decide what you want your money to buy.
Every 6 weeks
Most drugstore boxes run $7 to $30. Long or thick hair often needs two boxes.

Single-process shows a root line at 4 to 6 weeks.
Box dye
$104
per year
| Sessions per year | 8.7 |
| 3-year total | $312 |
| Your time per year | 13 hrs |
Salon: single-process color
$1,300
per year
| Visits per year | 10.4 |
| 3-year total | $3,900 |
| Chair time per year | 10 hrs |
The honest math: box dye costs about $1,196 less per year.
That is real money and I will not pretend it is not. Here is what the salon number buys instead:
- A formula mixed for your hair, not for the average head on the box photo
- Even color with no banding where old dye overlaps new dye
- A grow-out plan, so week 8 looks intentional instead of overdue
- No surprise result that needs a costly fix later
Box dye default from StyleSeat’s hair color cost guide, which puts at-home dye at $7 to $30 a box. Color correction figures from Ugly Duckling Color’s pricing guide: about $120 an hour, $300 to $375 for a typical job, $400 to $500 for a major one. Salon defaults are my published Venice FL menu prices. Edit any number to fit your situation.

Which services stretch longest?
- Balayage and foilayage are built for a soft grow-out. Most of my clients refresh every 12 to 16 weeks, with a gloss around week 6 to hold the tone in the Florida sun.
- Gray blending runs 10 to 14 weeks because the grow-out has no hard line.
- Partial highlights want a retouch every 6 to 8 weeks.
- Single-process color shows a hard root line at 4 to 6 weeks, so it needs the most visits of any service.
Fewer visits per year is one reason a bigger up-front service can cost less across a full year than a cheaper one you repeat every month.
