How I place full highlights

Full highlights are foils in every section of your head, not just the top or the part. For full highlights I weave fine pieces in every section, paint them with Schwarzkopf, then seal each one in foil so it lifts evenly and reaches a brightness that open-air color cannot match. A full head usually takes 60 to 75 foils, which is why it runs about 2 to 3 hours. I work one client at a time in a private suite, so I am not running between three chairs while your color processes. Shape and balance is the key to a great haircut, and the same eye decides where every foil lands so the brightness reads natural instead of striped.

The place a lot of salons get this wrong is the plan. Done in a hurry, foils come out chunky or mismatched at the part. I read your base, your old color, and your porosity first, then map the placement before any product goes on. At the rinse I finish with a glaze or toner so the tone is locked, not left raw and brassy.

Foils or balayage: how I steer you

This is the question I answer most. Both brighten your hair, but they are built for different goals. I steer clients to foils when they want full, blended coverage from root to end, or when they want gray coverage, because foils give the lift and the saturation to do it. I steer them to balayage when they want a lived-in, low-maintenance look that grows out soft with no hard line. Balayage is hand-painted and processed at room temperature, so it will not lift as far and it is not the tool for solid gray coverage. If you want bright, defined, all-over dimension, foils win, and that is exactly what full highlights deliver.

How often should you retouch?

Plan on a retouch every 6 to 8 weeks. The single biggest maintenance mistake I see is waiting too long between visits. When the regrowth gets long, the line between your fresh color and the new growth is hard to match, and that is what turns a clean highlight into a patchy one. A timely visit keeps your full highlights seamless and keeps each appointment shorter and easier on your hair. If you only want brightness around the face or you stretch your visits, a partial highlight is the smarter, cheaper plan.
